Run Become

Learn more about becoming a local hub leader

Thank you for your interest in running Become in your church, diocese, network or organisation. We want to give you access to the course and its content for you to lead a hub in your context.

Offering videos that are a hybrid of teaching, activities and discussions, Become is delivered over 10 sessions through local hubs – gatherings of 6-12 Become participants meeting in different venues across the UK. Each local hub meets regularly, journeying together as they discover more about God and his call on their lives.

If you’ve already applied to run Become, you can find everything you need in My Become Hub.

We would like to invite YOU to run Become in your area! We will give you the support throughout the entire course, and provide you with the training and resources you need to set up a Become Hub.

You will need to:

  • Gather a small team to help run Become
  • Provide a welcoming environment to host the students, including refreshments
  • Facilitate worship
  • Help each student plan and deliver at least one ‘Thought for the Day’ and one ‘Creative Prayer’ activity during Become
  • Ensure each student is connected with an appropriate Learning Mentor, and is regularly meeting with them

You will also need a projector (or similar) and PA (if needed) for each session.

If you would like to run Become or would just like to know more, please don’t hesitate to get in contact.

Facilitating a Become Hub

As a Become Facilitator, you are leading the way in this journey of theology and leadership. We will provide you with the tools, resources and behind-the-scenes guide to help you facilitate Become with confidence and ease. Whether you’re stepping into this role for the first time or you’re an experienced facilitator – you’ve got this!

Become is all about growing into the leaders God has made us to be. You’ll be guiding your participants through nine video teaching sessions. These sessions are designed to stir up deep reflections, discussions, and growth. Your role is to help keep the energy high, the conversations flowing, and ensure everyone feels comfortable diving into the topics.

The 10th session is a special one — it’s all about coming together to celebrate the journey so far. This is where you’ll help your group reflect on what they’ve learned, share their experiences, and discuss ‘what’s next?’ for each participant as they continue their leadership journey.

Become is all about the journey, not just the destination. So, enjoy the process, have fun with your group, and don’t be afraid to add your own style!

We’re cheering you on every step of the way!

Vision

At Become, we want to highlight the value of people from estates and low-income communities, making it clear that you’re not just welcome in the Church — you’re essential. We’re not here to force anyone into a mould they don’t fit. We believe that everyone has a part to play in building God’s Kingdom, and that everyone has gifts from God. No one gets left out of the Kingdom. Become is for everyone — just like Jesus is.

Diversity isn’t just something we should tolerate, it’s something we need! A healthy, growing church thrives when its leadership and welcome reflect the full range of people it serves. To truly be the Church, we need leaders from all walks of life.

And let’s be clear, being a leader doesn’t mean you have to run a church. Growing in leadership can be as simple as gaining confidence, to lead in any sphere whether inside or outside of the Church. Whatever the role, Become is here to help participants grow into the leaders God made them to be.

Core values

We believe leadership starts with knowing your true identity. Become helps you see yourself the way God sees you — made in his image, called for a purpose, and full of potential. It’s not about where you come from; it’s about who you’re becoming.

Leadership isn’t about having a title or being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about serving others, lifting people up, and making a difference right where you are. Become is all about growing into leaders who lead with humility, integrity, and love.

Hospitality is at the heart of Become. It’s not just about a cup of tea and a biscuit, it’s about creating a space where everyone feels valued and cared for. That’s why we share meals together, even if it’s just sandwiches. Food poverty can be a real issue, and no one can grow in leadership if they’re running on empty.

Everyone faces obstacles — self-doubt, setbacks, or feeling like leadership isn’t for “people like me”. Become gives space to be real about those struggles while helping you grow in confidence, resilience, and strength.

Leadership isn’t a solo journey. We learn, grow, and lead best in community. Become is about building relationships, encouraging one another, and stepping into leadership together, knowing that God calls us to bring hope and change to those around us.

Roles

As a Become Facilitator, your job is to ensure each session runs smoothly, participants are learning, and — just as importantly — they’re enjoying the experience. Your role is crucial to achieving the goals of Become; you’ll be modelling the character and leadership outcomes we want to develop throughout the journey. Become runs best when done as a team, so be sure to get some helpers and accompaniers to do it with you.

  • Facilitate engaging activities: You’ll lead exercises and hands-on learning experiences. We all come from different backgrounds, with a mix of positive and negative experiences of training. Your job is to make learning fun, creative, interactive, and inclusive for everyone
  • Create a welcoming environment: Hospitality matters! You’ll ensure the space feels welcoming, with the right setup, refreshments, and resources. If participants come from different churches and communities, you’ll help them connect, form groups, and navigate group dynamics in a positive way
  • Handle course logistics: From setting up the sound and screen to playing materials, managing communication between participants and their hub, and collecting feedback, you’ll be the go-to person for the admin side of things
  • Coaching: Each session, a participant will have the opportunity to plan and deliver a Thought for the Day. You’ll be making sure that whoever is doing each session is arranged and that the participants get the help they need to plan the thought they are going to share
  • Lead a team effectively: You’ll coordinate a team and delegate tasks where needed. It’s important for participants to see a healthy, collaborative team in action, so balancing delegation with encouragement is key to running workshops smoothly and facilitating the course material

It’s great to have someone take charge of the refreshments, or if you’re serving a meal, someone to handle the cooking. You’ll also want a tech-savvy person to set up the equipment and pause the videos when needed. Plus, having someone at the door to greet participants with a warm welcome can really set the right tone as people arrive. You might also want to find someone who can help with administration and take a lead on communicating with participants between sessions.

It can be really helpful to have a few extra people in the room to ‘accompany’ participants. These might be other leaders from the local church who come along to support, encourage discussion, and help everyone build connections. An ideal accompanier would be someone who sees the participants in day-to-day life and can catch up with participants between sessions.

Overview of the course

Become is a 10-session course, with nine teaching videos followed by a final celebration session. It’s delivered locally through Local Hubs, and participants may come from the same church or community, or from a mix of different ones. There is no formal accreditation or learning assessment — Become is all about personal growth and leadership development.

Become covers a range of topics designed to help participants grow, both as followers of Jesus and in Christian leadership. It begins with exploring identity and sharing personal stories, then dives into God’s story and how we share it with others. Key sessions include understanding who Jesus is, how to start new things, building healthy teams, navigating communication and conflict, setting boundaries, and developing spiritual disciplines for a full life. The course ends with a reflection on identity and a celebration of the journey together.

Although Become can be used and adapted in a variety of ways, the full experience is more than just teaching videos and activities. You can see all of the components in the Session Outlines below.

Get yourself ready

  • Watch the videos: Familiarise yourself with the session so you know what’s coming up. Think about any questions your participants might have after watching the video
  • Be prepared: Make sure you have all the materials you need for the session and that you’ve printed enough handouts for everyone!
  • Pray: For each participant, asking for their needs, concerns, and growth

Create a welcoming atmosphere

  • Say hello: Have someone at the door to welcome participants with a smile. This helps set a positive tone right from the start
  • Comfortable seating: Arrange the seating in a way that feels inclusive and encourages conversation. Circles or small group clusters can create a sense of equality and openness, rather than rows
  • Name tags: Providing name tags helps participants feel recognised and makes it easier to connect, especially for the first few sessions
  • Worship music (optional): Some quiet background worship music as people arrive can create a peaceful, reflective atmospher

Design the space for learning

  • Clear view of materials: Make sure the screen for videos is visible to everyone, and that the sound is clear. A tech check before the session begins is always a good idea
  • Quiet and distraction-free: If possible, choose a space that’s free from loud distractions, or set up a quiet, peaceful area within the room that helps participants focus on the session
  • Adequate lighting: Soft but adequate lighting creates a comfortable learning environment. Too dim, and it might feel sleepy; too bright, and it can feel harsh

Prepare for hospitality

  • Refreshments: Offering simple snacks, tea, or coffee can go a long way in helping participants feel welcome and at ease. It also gives people a reason to connect and chat before or after the session
  • Meal (optional): Depending on the time of day you run Become, you might want to consider sharing a cooked meal or sandwiches
  • Comfortable environment: Make sure the room is at a comfortable temperature, not too hot or too cold

As a Become Facilitator, getting to know your participants is essential for creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Here are some tips to help you engage with everyone, understand their backgrounds, and meet their needs:

  • At the start of your first session, invite everyone to introduce themselves. Ask them to share a bit about who they are, their backgrounds, and what they hope to get out of the course. This sets a friendly tone and helps everyone feel connected
  • Some people might be more comfortable speaking up, while others prefer writing things down. Be flexible in how you communicate and encourage different ways of expressing ideas
  • Create an environment where participants can support each other. Pairing people with different experiences can lead to great discussions and help build relationships
  • When discussing topics, invite everyone to share their thoughts and experiences. Remind them that every perspective adds value to the group’s learning
  • Make sure participants know they can come to you and the team with questions, ideas, or even just to chat. An open atmosphere helps them feel valued and makes sharing easier

It might feel strange to think about the destination before the journey has even begun, but it’s helpful to have an idea of where things could lead. Become is designed to be personal. Everyone will be at different stages of life, experience, and maturity. That means by the end of the course, each participant might be in a very different place.

The main goal is that each person grows in confidence and steps more fully into who God has made them to be as a leader. We’re not expecting anyone to be a finished product by the end: none of us are! We’re all learning and growing together.

But as you journey with your group, keep checking in with them. What is God saying? Where might he be leading them? What might he be calling them to do? These conversations are important, and they’ll look different for each person.

For some, the next step might be stepping up in leadership within their church or community. Others might even be thinking about planting a church. If you have the resources to support them, that’s amazing! But if you’d like some extra guidance, the CCX Estates Team is happy to chat with you and your participants to work out the next steps. Just reach out, we’d love to help!
