Bishop Philip North outlines eight tips for maintaining persistence in prayer

Exercise

Consider Bishop Philip North’s eight tips for maintaining persistence in prayer.

  1. Weekly worship: This weekly gathering offers an encounter with God through corporate prayer and worship.
  2. Routine of prayer: Stick to a time to pray, first thing in the morning, at lunchtime, and at night time. Sanctify your time.
  3. Structure of prayer: You can use the three-fold structure: “Thank you”, “Sorry” and “Please”, use apps like Lectio 365, or pray the daily office.
  4. Place of prayer: Think about where you go to pray. If you can pray anywhere, you still risk praying nowhere.
  5. Praying with others: Is there a time when you can pray as a group?
  6. Soul friend/mentor/spiritual director: Another person can help equip you and keep you accountable in your prayer life.
  7. Refresher events: Find things that renew you in your life of prayer.
  8. Bring it all together in a ‘Rule of life’: Write down what it means to you to live out the Christian life.
