7. Baton Passer

During a relay race, the baton passer cannot afford to drop the baton, not just while they are running, but also when passing it to the next runner. If the baton falls, the team is disqualified. The challenge when rolling out your change project is not to forget the vision: the compelling reason why the present culture is being disrupted. We therefore need to steward the vision, keeping it at the centre during implementation and in-between change projects.

Stewarding the vision means making it happen but also passing it on to others for its continuation. For this to happen, the Transition Leader empowers the Christian community or organisation by passing on the change traits. In other words, building a culture of adaptability to survive in an increasing world of uncertainty. We need to build disciples willing to share discernment, vision, and pursue God’s mission. Below are some ideas on how you can do this.

Passing on the baton – some ideas:

  • Get change agitators involved who will help land the change project
  • Continue to collaborate and partner with others for fresh, innovative ideas
  • Develop a culture where disciples are God-mission-focused (i.e. pioneering, discipleship, church planting)
  • Raise up lay-leaders and give some of your power away

Activity – Actions

Baton Passers help the mission to continue

    • Think about how you can raise up others to be adaptable and have a healthy approach to uncertainty
    • Is there anyone who you can mentor to pass on how to lead change? Share the change traits with them and encourage them to do a small mission-based project

Baton Passers distribute their power

    • Have a think about who is not represented at the table of decision making?
    • Begin to pray and discern who should be there
